Calluqueo Glacier is a beautiful and huge mass of millenary ice that descends through the west slope of San Lorenzo Mountain, becoming the main glacier of this mountain. At its base, it has a beautiful lagoon of greyish colors, resulting from the great amount of sediment carried through the water from the mountaintop.
A new attraction for visitors is trekking and ascending towards the majestic Calluqueo Glacier, that emerges from the west side of San Lorenzo Mountain.
The glacier has gained quite a lot of interest due to its easy access. You must only travel 55 kilometers south of Cochrane to contemplate it in all its majesty. From here, it is possible to appreciate San Lorenzo Mountain, the second highest peak of Patagonia.
Once on the glacier, there is a beautiful lagoon of greyish colors, and pristine forests with a varied flora, which has outstanding species such as the lenga beech (Nothofagus pumilio,) the ñirre beech (Nothofagus antarctica,) the cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum) and the coigüe (Nothofagus dombeyi.) It is also home to a varied fauna, where species like the huemul or south Andean deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) stand out, which has been chosen to be the symbol of Cochrane commune, as well as others like the guanaco (Lama guanicoe,) the ñandú (Rhea pennata), and the culpeo fox (Pseudalopex culpaeus.) Bird species like the cóndor (Vultur gryphus) can also be sighted, as well as falcons (Falco,) eagles (Geranoaetus melanoleucus australis,) thrushes or zorzal in Spanish (Turdus falcklandii magellanicus,) teros (Vanellus chilensis fretensis,) and the caiquén (Chloephaga picta picta), among others.
